Typojanchi 2019: 6th International Typography Biennale
On Plants is a multisensory installation that reimagines language through the interplay of light, sound, and typography. Letters circulate between spaces and non-spaces, forming a continuous landscape that invites viewers to engage in a visual stroll. The installation includes two parts: Type Forest and Variable Type Show. Type Forest brings together nine writing systems—Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Thai, Hebrew, Devanagari, Chinese, Kana, and Hangeul—into a typographic environment where scripts coexist beyond cultural boundaries. Variable Type Show presents a motion-graphic film made with adjustable variable fonts, offering a visual and auditory experience to viewers seated on bean bags within the space.

Founded in 2019, PLANE AND VERTICAL is a design studio and publisher based in Seoul. We have worked with a wide range of materials and technologies – from flat to spatial, from form to context.
We have a deep interest in addressing and responding to the issues of our time through design, publishing, and other creative practices. Our work focuses on identifying and capturing the various potentials of visual language around the intersection of culture, industry, and art. Our practice aims to amplify oppressed voices and reveal overlooked phenomena in our society.

PLANE AND VERTICAL’s secondary brand, Soft Hard is an experimental, multilingual publication that serves as both a newsletter and a creative playground for cultural workers. Each issue invites a wide range of professionals—designers, architects, artists, curators, writers, and independent publishers, among others—from diverse cultural backgrounds. The publication features a loose and non-linear structure, along with a quick turnaround time, in an effort to remain fresh and relevant to our constantly evolving interests and circumstances.
Founded and published by Yuseon Park and Immanuel Yang of PLANE AND VERTICAL. Soft Hard will soon be launching a new form of platform.

Soft Hard is an experimental, multilingual publication. Its loose, nonlinear structure aims to serve as both a newsletter and a creative playground for cultural workers. Each new issue will invite a wide range of professionals from diverse backgrounds—designers, architects, artists, curators, writers, and independent publishers, among others—to share glimpses of their recent work in response to a given theme.
The theme of the inaugural issue, “in conversation,” reflects on the various connections and dialogues that arise as different practices evolve.

For this Soft Hard 1, Anouk developed a contribution on pages 1–8, inviting you to cut the dashed lines printed in silver ink, fold the paper, observe the new compositions, pleat, find, and play.

아눅 베커스는 은색 잉크로 인쇄된 점선을 따라 잘라내고, 종이를 접으며, 구성된 모습을 관찰하고 주름을 잡아가는 놀이적 작업을 제안합니다. The conversation between Sheila Levrant de Bretteville and Yuseon Park began with a discussion on how to make an eye bolt necklace. Through exchanges of emails that touched on reflections, recent updates, the move, the Woman’s Building, CalArts, Yale, and the recent large-scale retrospective and gathering, the dialogue unfolds into a nuanced reflection on self, community, and what it means to “belong,” both interpersonally and on a larger global scale.

실라 르브랑 드 브레트빌과 박유선의 대화는 아이 볼트 목걸이를 만드는 방법에 대한 이야기로 시작되었습니다. 작업, 교육, 그리고 최근 열린 대규모 회고전에 대해 이야기를 나누는 과정에서 대화는 개인과 공동체, 그리고 더 큰 차원에서의 소속감의 의미에 대한 성찰로 이어집니다. Jessica Flemming and Avery Youngblood’s contribution to Soft Hard’s inaugural issue reflects their meandering exploration into the theme of “In Conversation.” Through an AI-synthesis of recorded discussions which inspired written reflections between each other, they delve into the confusing connections between life, design, and the creation of space. The following captures their thoughts on the necessity of dedicated creative environments, the politics of privacy, and the balance between solitude and community in fostering genuine artistic expression. They also explore the mental challenges of decision-making within a graphic design and a personal practice, as well as in life. This correspondence serves as testament to the intimate relationship between our creative processes and the spaces we inhabit.

제시카 플레밍과 에이버리 영블러드의 글은 『Soft Hard 1』의 주제인 “In Conversation”를 탐구한 여정입니다. 두 디자이너는 대화 기록을 AI가 합성한 내용을 바탕으로 글을 주고받으며, 삶, 디자인, 공간 창조 사이의 연결고리를 탐구합니다.
 What Miguel Gajdos and Jeemin Shim were gathering from is based on the fact that they have in parallel questioned certain aspects of design, its methodologies and industry since around 2020. The images they collected all pull from thoughts, processes, and iterations influenced by this evaluation of design, how and where they want to be doing their work—thinking more about hierarchies, land, territory, etc. Through individual perspectives and circumstances, this approach has evolved to prioritize practices shaped by “the enduring relationships and interconnectedness inherent among people, ecosystems, and infrastructures.” Given this self-evaluation they both experienced happening real-time, they thought to order things chronologically, interspersed by aspects of their work. This includes memes, research photos, outputs of work or sketches, and readings.

미겔 가이도스와 심지민의 타임라인은 2020년부터 디자인과 방법론에 대한 공동의 질문에서 출발합니다. 두 디자이너는 밈, 리서치, 작업 결과물, 스케치 등을 수집해 타임라인을 완성했습니다.
 In May 2023, six months after Limestone Books opened its doors, J. Chen began to clean hotel rooms, and recorded the books left by guests on the bedside tables. Chen found similarities between caring for hotel rooms and caring for books, as both require meticulous attention to even the smallest details. Whether cleaning and organizing at the bookstore or maintaining order in hotel rooms, her work centered on erasing traces and tending to the subtle yet meaningful aspects of life.

라임스톤 북스를 공동 설립한 J.첸은 호텔 객실 청소를 하며 손님들이 머리맡에 남긴 책을 사진으로 기록했습니다. 호텔과 서점에서의 일은 모두 흔적을 지우고, 질서를 유지하며, 삶을 돌보는 작업으로 이어집니다.
 The exhibition Manual of Manual is a gathering of manuals — [A], which are completed or in progress, and [B], which serve as meta-manuals describing [A]. Each participant attempts to chart time and space using their own tools, resulting in a collection that explores the acts of investigation, experimentation, and sharing. The exhibition invites viewers to navigate the interplay between Manuals [A] and [B], exploring not only the works but also the tools and processes behind them.

“설명서의 설명서”는 참여 디자이너들이 각자의 방법론으로 시간과 공간을 탐구한 결과물을 공유한 전시로, 2024년 여름 서울에서 열렸습니다. 디자이너들의 탐구와 실험, 공유를 통해 시간과 공간을 횡단하며 창작의 다양한 가능성을 제시합니다.

During Open Studios, Immanuel Yang hosted a pre-launch event for Soft Hard, a publication she is developing in collaboration with Yuseon Park, a publisher and graphic designer based in Seoul. Its loose, nonlinear structure aims to serve as both a newsletter and a creative playground for cultural workers. Each new issue will invite a wide range of professionals from diverse backgrounds—designers, architects, independent publishers, writers, artists, and curators, among others—to share glimpses of their recent work in response to a given theme.
